Elder Mediation Services

CJI offers older adults (55+) and their families, friends, caregivers, service providers and others in their lives a process to address conflict, elder abuse, and decision making that affect their vital relationships and their long term wellbeing. We also provide education and group support to older adults and the community.

Our holistic approach focuses on preventing further harm, healing, and restoring relationships. We ensure an equal voice for all participants and respect individual values. Our services are voluntary and free.

Specialized Services

Mediation & Circles

EMS helps to address conflict situations involving older adults, including family, neighbour, workplace, and other situations using restorative processes. EMS also utilizes restorative justice processes to address and support older adults who have experienced situations of harm. Our service aims to promote harm reduction and awareness to aid in the older adult’s safety. EMS offers Restorative Circles and Elder Mediation to engage the older adult, the one who has caused harm, and their supports in a safe and respectful conversation to discuss what they need to address the harm. Elder abuse includes: financial, physical, psychological, sexual, and neglect. EMS receives referrals from community agencies, families, friends, self-referrals, Court, and the Senior Support Team of Waterloo Region.

Peer Mentor

Peer mentors provide support for older adults experiencing loneliness, isolation and conflict in their lives. Elder Mediation Services offers older adults a Peer Mentor with whom to share their experiences and concerns with, in turn empowering them to feel safe and supported. Peer Mentors also provide encouragement to continue to be active in developing positive conflict resolution skills and building healthy positive relationships with others.

Group Services

Offering older adults a variety of differently themed groups to participate in to forge new connections, to learn, share ideas, to support each other, and most of all have some fun! Groups offered are Community Activity Groups e.g. crafts, trivia games, social events. Community Conversation Circles for support and shared storytelling. Community Cultural Activity Groups – fostering understanding of different cultures. Community Informational Groups – guided presentations, interesting and relevant information for older adults, and connecting with other community agencies offering services to older adults.

REKINDLE

reKINdle is an initiative in partnership with SPECTRUM Aging With Pride. reKINdle facilitates dialogue opportunities between older adults in the community and volunteers with SPECTRUM Aging With Pride to share experiences and build relationships.

Home Share

Connecting older adults who want to age in their own home, who may be experiencing loneliness and isolation, and may need assistance with household tasks, with other older adults similarly needing companionship and are looking for affordable housing. EMS assists with a process of matching compatible individuals on needs and preferences. Following a successful match, EMS continues with ongoing support to ensure safety, respect, and effective conflict resolution service, if required.

During our 40+ year history, we have continuously responded to community needs by creatively, and innovatively applying restorative justice principles to new problems. We believe the only limit to the power of restorative justice is the capacity of the human heart to change and grow.
